Tehran’s Mellat Cinema Complex played host to the 4th Korean Film Festival in Tehran, which kicked off on Sunday, December 27th and ended on the 30th. Four major Korean films were shown during the event with all screenings free to the public. Speaking to the Tehran Times, South Korean Ambassador to Iran KIM Seung-ho stated “We need to introduce South Korea to the Iranian nation, as the Iranian government lets more Iranian people be introduced to Korean people.” He added, “We will start with the festival; this is the fourth festival, and we want to promote this festival more through advertisements and the news. I want the two governments to do more and we plan to do more cultural activities between the two countries.” A mix of commercial films, which mostly are family-friendly, were revealed to the Iranian public during the event. These included the 2005 Korean War smash hit Welcome To Dongmakgol by director PARK Kwang-hyun and featuring stars SHIN Ha-kyun and JUNG Jae-young. The other films were contemporary works, including hit maker KIM Yong-hwa’s 3D baseball-playing gorilla feature Mr. Go (2013), HAN Jae-rim’s period drama The Face Reader (2013) with SONG Kang-ho and KIM Sung-ho’s How To Steal A Dog (2014), an adaptation of the children’s book of the same name by Barbara O’Connell which has recently picked up awards at the Ale Kino! International Young Audience Film Festival and International Children’s Film Festival India.
